Siemens is to equip Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited (LPGCL), a Bajaj Group company, with digital technology for its power plant in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Siemens will provide a complete thermal twin for the LPGCL coal-fired power plant, enabling improvements in the plant’s performance. Siemens staff, in collaboration with the plant operations team, will provide remote performance monitoring and diagnostics from the recently opened Siemens MindSphere application centre in Gurgaon.

The thermal twin, powered by thermodynamic analysis and machine learning, allows power plant operators to diagnose performance gaps for every asset in the cycle in real time and provides recommendations for improving efficiency. This co-creation approach will assist the plant team in identifying and rectifying performance gaps in a timely manner.

“We are delighted to partner with Siemens in our digitalisation journey,” said RS Sharma, managing director of Bajaj Power Ventures. “The digital solutions are aimed at improving power plant performance and optimising operations. The solutions, once executed, will result in sustainable and efficient power generation.”

Laura Anderson, head of Siemens gas and power services, added: “With our advanced digital products, we are providing customers in India and around the world with the tools to navigate changing market requirements and meet their operational goals. Close collaboration from inside our MindSphere application centres enables us to work together with our customers to fully realise the value behind their data.”

LPGCL has made a foray in developing a super critical thermal power project in the Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand to produce 1980MWs (three times 660MW) of power. This was commissioned in March 2016.

Bajaj Power Ventures includes LPGCL and Bajaj Energy with a total of 2500MW of thermal power generation. It is among the top three private sector profitable power producers in India, with revenues of US$2bn in 2016.
