Portugal’s governmental agency AICEP (Agência para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal) has launched a campaign highlighting progress being made by cities throughout the country in adopting smart city technologies, especially aiming at sustainability and greater urban energy efficiency. These include the adoption of smart poles, urban smart energy platforms, water management programmes and the adoption of electric vehicles in urban waste management.

Cities and municipalities that have adopted these solutions include the country’s capital, Lisbon, as well as Matosinhos, Vila Nova de Gaia, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Guimarães, and Cascais.

The Portuguese company Omniflow  has created Smart Poles, a smart sustainable infrastructure that adds various services and is powered by wind and solar energy, taking advantage of natural resources to produce energy. Omniflow solutions are already implemented in Portuguese municipalities such as Lisbon and Matosinhos.

dstgroup ‘s Innovation Point  developed the Powertracker, a digital platform that monitors the production of renewable energy generated by solar panels, and is already in use in Lisbon , Vila Nova de Gaia and Vila Nova de Famalicão.

In Guimarães,  several water retention basins have been created to prevent flooding and overflows in the city. The Gymnastics Academy building has been covered in cork and has a sustainable ventilation system that keeps the temperature regulated according to the different seasons.

In Cascais , municipal waste is collected aboard a 100% electric truck, which allows for more environmentally friendly collection, and MobiCascais encourages citizens, through the mobile application, to opt for electric vehicles, from the soft mobility until the hydrogen bus.

The AICEP agency is implementing its campaign under the title “Changing the Future Together”, and aims to promote the adoption of sustainable smart city technologies.
