LoRaWAN boosts Vienna smart city plans

Wien Energie and Actility are partnering to deploy a LoRaWAN network in Vienna. The deployment will align with Vienna’s digital strategy, which aims to make Vienna the most liveable and smartest world city. The city is committed to a policy of ‘human digitalisation’. It wants technology to support residents, not displace them.

French IoT network provider Actility will provide its ThingPark Wireless platform for the project. Designed for LPWAN connectivity, ThingPark Wireless a number of large-scale, nationwide IoT network deployments worldwide. The platform is appreciated for its security, carrier-grade availability, scalability, multi-radio support and adherence to the latest specifications of the LoRa Alliance, simplifying interconnection with other public and private networks.

Austrian energy provider Wien Energie is aiming at making a significant contribution to Vienna’s digitisation initiative. Wiener Netze, a sister company of Wien Energie, will build the outdoor network in Vienna, while Wien Energie focuses on indoor solutions. The network is currently undergoing a testing process, with implementation of scalable use cases and projects expected to begin in early 2024.
