Californian firm Veniam and Single Digits, a New Hampshire-based provider of wifi network experiences, are working together to make it easier for mobile IoT devices and connected vehicles to transfer data over wifi access points on the move.

Although mobile IoT devices such as dashcams, telematics units and connected cars come with different wireless interfaces – wifi, 4G, 5G and so on – their data transfers are often limited to the available cellular links. To save on data costs, mobile IoT companies end up sending shorter and lower quality videos, performing fewer over-the-air updates, and ultimately reducing the quality of experience of their end users.

By combining Veniam’s ability to make the most out of all the wireless interfaces in mobile IoT devices with Single Digits’ expertise in automated, seamless wireless connectivity, this partnership enables automotive OEMs, telematics providers and application platforms to expand 4G and 5G with access to millions of wifi hotspots across the USA and internationally. Instead of manual logins and cumbersome business processes, user devices connect easily and automatically to the available wifi networks subject to global policies defined in the cloud.

“By partnering with Single Digits, we are making it even simpler and cost effective for Veniam customers to get more and better data,” said João Barros, CEO of Veniam. “Ultimately, it is about providing all moving IoT devices and their specific applications with the best options for edge connectivity at any location and at any time.”

John Haspil, vice president at Single Digits, added: “We’re thrilled to enable on-the-move connectivity between cars and mobile IoT devices over wireless networks through our work with Veniam. Our roaming hub and powerful suite of services and software for wifi authorisation, authentication and accounting are essential tools for companies incorporating wifi offload into their overall network footprint.”

With an IP portfolio of more than 130 issued patents, Veniam makes the most out of available networks, moving massive amounts of data between vehicles and the cloud. Best known for its mobile wifi offload and city-scale vehicle mesh networks, it works closely with fleets, vehicle OEMs and tier-one suppliers.

Single Digits is a provider of intelligent managed networks, delivering connectivity services to nearly 4000 users across mobile IoT, retail, transportation, education, healthcare, multi-family housing, senior living, hospitality, smart city and large venues. Since its acquisition of BSG Wireless in 2020, it has become a specialist in wifi roaming, providing technology for roaming and offload, identity management, authentication services, financial settlement, location services, and data and analytics.
