South Korean operator SK Telecom has certified a cellular module from Swiss firm U-Blox to add security to its LTE-M network.

The Sara-R410M-73B LTE-M modules secure the IoT from end to end. The module will support a broad spectrum of IoT applications such as smart metering, telematics, asset and vehicle tracking, security systems, building automation, as well as smart lighting and connected health.

"U-Blox has always considered security in the design of its positioning and wireless communications products,” says Eric Heiser, head of services and security at U-Box. “With Sara-R410M-73B, we are launching our first commercial module featuring device and data security implementation in partnership with Kudelski, utilising their patented technology for key management.”

The modules are suitable for mission-critical IoT applications, as they include a unique and immutable root of trust. This provides the foundation for a trusted set of security functionalities.

“The scalable, pre-shared key management system offers best-in-class data encryption and decryption, both on-device as well as from-device-to-cloud,” said Patty Felts, product manager at U-Blox. “Utilising the latest (D)TLS stack and cipher suites with hardware-based crypto acceleration provides robust, efficient and protected communication."

The company’s CellLocate cellular positioning technology enables standalone location estimation based on surrounding mobile network information or in conjunction with GNSS positioning data to improve location.

Future-proof products via LW-M2M with dynamically loaded objects and uFOTA (firmware over the air) let users future-proof their services by means of uFOTA client and server firmware updates, which use LW-M2M, a light and compact protocol for IoT applications.

Customised objects and resources can be created and added to devices that are already commercially in the field via the LW-M2M dynamically loaded objects functionality. And with manufacturing in ISO/TS 16949-certified production sites and an extended operating temperature of -40 to +85˚C, it is suitable for industrial applications.

With headquarters in Thalwil, Switzerland, U-Blox is globally present with offices in Europe, Asia and the USA.
