Amazon Just Walk Out is letting retailers add RFID-checkout capabilities to any retail space in as little as a day.
Traditional PoS systems can cause bottlenecks and slow checkout times, and lead to inefficient use of staff in high-traffic locations such as stadiums and concert venues. Just Walk Out RFID lanes address these problems by offering fast and frictionless checkouts.
These lanes are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing systems, adapt to spaces of any size, and enhance flexibility to reconfigure store layouts. They integrate with various payment providers, and can reduce labour costs for operations, improving the overall shopping experience. These lanes can enable faster checkout times and more efficient operations.
“The technology has drastically improved the fan experience by eliminating checkout lines,” said Lauren Gurley, senior manager of retail operations for the Miami Dolphins, Hard Rock Stadium and the Formula One Miami Grand Prix. “I’m also looking forward to implementing the RFID tagging across our venue for the inventory management capabilities before the next season. That’s just as big, if not a bigger opportunity, than speeding up checkout.”
Managing high-traffic areas and reducing congestion during peak hours are a problem for many retailers. In pilots, Just Walk Out RFID lanes delivered checkout speeds up to four times faster than traditional PoS systems, making them suitable for fast-paced settings, sporting events and concerts. Pilot customers also experienced a 40% reduction in required labour to operate a store and reduced the time to complete cycle counts by 96%.
The RFID lanes empower retailers and venue operators to create dynamic shopping environments that efficiently processes large crowds during major events. For instance, venue operators quickly reduce wait times and streamline merchandise purchases at arenas and stadiums during concerts and halftime, ensuring a smoother, more efficient shopping experience for fans. Similarly, merchandise and apparel retailers better handle peak shopping periods such as Black Friday or holiday sales by reducing bottlenecks and long queues at checkout.
With Just Walk Out RFID lanes, retailers and venue operators gain the flexibility to support any size store and quickly transform unused spaces into permanent or temporary retail locations, such as pop-up shops and seasonal events. These lanes are designed for quick setup and easy repositioning.
RFID is a technology that enables contactless retail experiences by allowing the identification, categorisation and tracking of items via radio waves. This process operates through a two-part system consisting of RFID tags and lanes, with each tag containing a microchip that stores and transmits data. If an RFID tag is within the range of an RFID lane, the microchip transmits data on the tag to the lane. Each tag responds with a unique number that the lane receives and decodes. The data from the tag are then processed and sent to a host system. This exchange of data between the reader and the tag is fast and efficient and can occur within milliseconds.
Just Walk Out partnered with Avery Dennison (www.averydennison.com) to provide RFID tags. Avery Dennison offers a portfolio of RFID products, including options for standard sizes and formats for quick deployments, UPC integrations, supplemental hang tag and self-adhesive labels, branded and embellished hang tags, a wide range of sizes, and various inlay options.
Just Walk Out provides the lane hardware, tag printer, tag printing UI and handheld tooling required for store operations. Shops just provide the power and connectivity, and tag their items. The RFID lanes let retailers integrate into their existing technology ecosystem by syncing Just Walk Out data with PoS and ERP systems, loyalty programmes, and flexible payment providers. Data can flow into systems automatically so stores can continue using existing processes for analytics and inventory management.
