Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has announced a high-voltage cable field-testing programme to help manufacturers, developers and utility providers test high-voltage cables for engineering, procurement, construction, renewable energy and utility use.

“As critical components of the power grid infrastructure, high-voltage cable systems play an essential role in our daily lives,” said Paul Ngai, vice president at UL. “The global transition to renewable energy and aging infrastructure are driving demand for high-voltage cable systems and field testing.”

Illinois-based UL can perform testing to various standards that apply to high-voltage AC and DC cable systems from the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, Insulated Cable Engineers Association, International Electrotechnical Commission, Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Council on Large Electric Systems and more. The programme can help the energy industry address reliability and performance difficulties throughout the product life cycle in areas such as factory acceptance tests before transportation, field acceptance tests after transportation and storage, commissioning tests after the completion of cable system installation, diagnostic tests during the operation of high voltage cable systems, and forensic analysis for cable system aging and failure mechanisms.

“UL’s capabilities and expertise in the energy and utilities sector enable us to support our global customers throughout the entire life cycle of high-voltage cable systems, from development to installation and ongoing maintenance,” said Ngai.

UL also offers field testing for medium-voltage cable systems, helping cable manufacturers and owners proactively address potential issues by evaluating the performance of cable systems and identifying installation or service aging defects.
