Danish EV charging platform Monta and Irish smart energy company GridBeyond have registered the first 2,000 EV assets into the UK’s Static Firm Frequency Response (SFFR). Utilising Monta’s PowerBank smart energy technology, the solution stabilises the UK’s grid, preventing outages despite increasing pressures on the UK’s energy system from data centres, AI, EVs as well as the energy transition programme.

In partnership with GridBeyond, charge points are deployed as demand-side assets in SFFR programmes through Monta’s PowerBank feature. PowerBank is a preventative smart energy solution that detects imbalances in the electrical grid and briefly pauses charging sessions to prevent power outages.

By connecting thousands of charge points to the grid, Monta helps distribute and alleviate stress caused by fluctuating electricity production and consumption charge point owners actively contribute to grid stability while earning Monta Wallet credits as a reward. This innovative approach enables businesses and individuals to participate in grid-balancing initiatives, helping their communities avoid blackouts and supporting a more resilient energy infrastructure.

EV charging stations are often concentrated in urban areas, generating high electricity demand in specific locations. This can strain the local grid, impacting EV charging availability and the overall power supply to homes and businesses.

Alex Iriondo, Grid Services Product Manager at Monta, said, “PowerBank is a game-changer for alleviating pressure on the electrical grid. As EV adoption continues to grow, we must build a resilient, sustainable infrastructure that ensures both accessibility and stability.”

“Monta’s solution manages the charging schedules of individual charge points, seamlessly integrating with our VPP platform for control and market access. GridBeyond provides market access and manages interactions with National Grid. The management of these first 2,000 EV charge points is a significant milestone for the market, showcasing the positive impact of EVs in balancing the grid,” commented Michael Kent, Head of EV Solutions at GridBeyond.
