It’s no secret that dairy farming is a hard job made harder when farmers can’t access enough hot water to properly clean and sanitize their equipment and facilities. Traditional water heaters don’t make the cut and can lead to increased expenses as farmers have to pay through the nose to have consistent hot water.
Digit News reports that Soltropy, a Scottish solar technology company, utilizes smart monitoring in its solar-powered water heating system that can help Scotland’s dairy farmers not only get the water they need, but find a potential savings of more than £6, 000 per year on energy costs.
When asked about the role IoT plays in this solution, Stuart Speake, Managing Director of Soltropy stated:
“The introduction of IoT and sensors is a big development in our sustainable solar thermal technology and will make it much easier for users to keep on top of system maintenance and performance. The first generation of the system is already used at a number of sites in Scotland and we have seen how it can reduce energy costs and fossil fuel consumption…Using IoT will only add to this, and we hope to see the new connected version installed across sites all over the UK, helping the sector’s transition to Net Zero.”
Because of the ability to leverage solar power and IoT connectivity, rural farmers to get the juice they need to heat their water tanks efficiently and on demand. This type of solution can branch into other rural markets, helping to bridge gaps in digital services to workers and farmers alike.
