The Uvalde school district in south east Texas has installed an AI-based gun detection system called Omnilert to protect schools in the district. The system monitors school surveillance camera feeds to detect weapons in real time.

In May, 2022, a school in the Uvalde school district was the centre of a mass shooting where a former student shot and killed 19 students and 2 teachers. Omnilert has provided the technology and services for free through a grant programme specifically for school districts impacted by gun violence.

The district had previously considered Omnilert’s solution but lacked the public funding to implement it. AI gun detection offers the potential for faster threat identification and response compared to traditional surveillance methods.

The Omnilert system employs AI to continuously analyse live video feeds from school security cameras to detect weapons in real time. On detection of a potential firearm, the system alerts human reviewers. It sends them an image, a short video, and location details of the suspected gun.

If a human reviewer confirms the threat, the system triggers a pre-defined response plan. This may include automatically locking doors, sounding alarms, notifying school staff, students, and first responders.

AI gun detection provides for faster response times, automated responses, continuous monitoring, and enhanced situational awareness.
