New Delhi-based Sterlite Power has completed a smart city optical fibre project in the Indian city of Gurugram.
The intra-city fibre network provides connectivity to government buildings and business clusters, and is used for critical applications such as security, surveillance and e-governance.
The company entered a PPP (public-private partnership) agreement with Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to build, manage and maintain the fibre network for 21 years.
Four underground ducts carry fibres connecting all the bus stops, schools, police stations and government buildings along with various private buildings. Two ducts among these are dedicated to Gurugram smart city’s operation and the other two can be commercially used by communication service providers. The entire route is updated through a GIS geographic information system along with integrated proactive fibre monitoring for preventive and corrective maintenance.
The infrastructure provides fibre connectivity to GMDA’s ICCC integrated command and control centre, which served as Gurugram’s Covid-19 war room for distribution of food and relief material.
Sterlite Power’s convergence business unit provides dark fibre using its optical ground wire (OPGW) network. The increasing demand for data has received another surge due to the work and learn from home arrangements during the pandemic. With technologies such as 5G, IoT and M2M, development of intra-city fibre infrastructure can be critical to enable telcos, ISPs and MSOs with fibre. Sterlite Power has knowledge of designing, deploying and maintaining OPGW and all-dielectric self-supporting fibre networks.
Sterlite develops power transmission infrastructure with projects of over 13,670 circuit kilometres and 24,800MVA in India and Brazil. With a portfolio of power conductors, EHV cables and OPGW, it also offers ways to upgrade, uprate and strengthen existing networks.
The company says it has set benchmarks in the industry by using technologies and innovative financing. It is also the sponsor of IndiGrid, India’s first power sector infrastructure investment trust, listed on the BSE and NSE.
