The City of Pamplona in Spain’s Navarre region has completed its six year smart city development project. A nominated Lighthouse Smart City, Pamplona focused on development of mobility, urban infrastructure and ICT, smart districts and energy.

The city was one of three nominated Lighthouse cities throughout the EU, with the other two being Tampere in Finland and Trento in Italy.

A number of European cities have replicated the smart city development of Pamplona as “satellite cities” including Kozani in the Greek region of Macedonia, Cluj-Napoca in Romania and Derry in Northern Ireland.

A distinctive feature of the Lighthouse cities and their satellites is that they all belong to historically, culturally and linguistically distinct autonomous regions within larger European countries.

Among the achievements of the Pamplona smart city development have been the urban regeneration of the Txantrea district, an urban district renewable urban programme, PV and e-bus charging integrated into a smart grid, solar parking for community energy, and development of sustainable social housing.

The city is hosting a conference February 28-29th to signpost developments over the course of the six year programme.
