Japanese technology giant NEC is providing a smart public transport ticketing system for the Australian capital Canberra.

The digital transformation of Canberra’s transport sector is moving forward following NEC’s partnership with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government.

The ACT ticketing system will use NEC’s smart mobility platform to provide smart ticketing, operational intelligence, safety, security and customer experience services.

Richard Duggan, general manager for critical infrastructure, smart transport and the IoT at NEC in Australia, said the company was proud to be working with the ACT covernment to develop Canberra’s technology landscape.

“NEC has been a trusted partner for businesses and governments across the world, and we are privileged to work with the ACT government to connect Canberra residents to a brighter, digital future,” he said. “NEC’s technology will play a critical role in ensuring Canberrans have a connected, smart and seamless transport network.”

As a specialist in critical communications infrastructure, developing smart cities and intelligent transport systems, 5G O-RAN, artificial intelligence and biometrics, NEC says it has the capability to drive Australia’s digital transformation.

NEC has a track record in delivering user friendly, smart transportation and services internationally, enabling seamless and safe travel for citizens in over 100 cities across four continents.

Duggan said NEC’s human-centric approach to technology helped build trust and legitimacy between citizens, their governments, and the technology they were using.

“With NEC’s smart mobility platform at the core of the next-generation ticketing system, Canberra residents can be assured that their public transport is equipped with the most advanced technology that is reliable, safe and secure,” he said.

NEC will use its Canberra facilities to deliver the smart mobility platform, and a local ACT team to operate and maintain this throughout the life of the contract.

The platform is SaaS provisioned, managed and operated, developed by NEC and supported by the NEC Australia Smart Transport Centre of Excellence team.
