The City of Hong Kong has begun operation of a smart lamp-post pilot scheme to support smart city development in the city, and improve 5G mobile network roll-out.

Under the Multi-functional Smart Lamp-posts Pilot Scheme, over 400 smart lamp-posts with smart devices have been put into operation in selected districts with higher pedestrian / traffic flow. These districts are: Kwun Tong; Kowloon City; Sai Kung; Yau Tsim Mong; Wan Chai; and Central & Western district.

The smart devices and applications installed on the smart lamp-posts collect real-time city data for use by city departments. Most of the collected data is also shared at the Public Sector Information Portal as open datasets for free use by the industry and general public.

The installation work under the Pilot Scheme was completed in end-December 2023.

To further promote the smart city development in Hong Kong, smart lamp-post will be a standard infrastructure to be implemented in new development areas (NDAs) under planning or construction with a view to providing bureaux / departments with a common infrastructure platform to support installation of relevant smart devices and applications for enhancing city management and developing innovative services to the general public.
