Connected vehicle specialist Geotab has partnered Applied Information, a developer of intelligent transportation infrastructure technology.

The partnership integrates Geotab’s GO telematics devices with Applied Information’s Glance Smart City Supervisory Platform to provide green-light priority for freight, public works, and commercial fleets. The system uses location and speed data from Geotab’s GO device to request an early or extended green light at connected signals, reducing corridor travel times by up to 47 percent.

According to a pilot project conducted by the University of Alabama in partnership with the Alabama Department of Transportation, travel time reductions of up to 47 percent were recorded for participating trucks without impacting general traffic flow. The deployment was tested along a 26-intersection freight corridor.

The technology aims to improve safety and driving efficiency by allowing heavy freight vehicles to move at a safe speed while clearing intersections efficiently.

“In our deployment, trucks were able to travel the corridor without stopping, avoiding unnecessary acceleration and fuel use. Travel times improved by nearly half compared to baseline conditions while keeping other traffic flowing,” said Dr. Alex Hainen, Associate Professor of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama.

Geotab’s Chief Revenue Officer Louis De Jong said the partnership “exemplifies how strategic partnerships can enhance our core offering” by providing transportation and Public Works fleets with a more robust and connected experience.
