Delhi is launching a “Safe City” project, with the roll-out of gunshot detectors, alerts, and 3,500 AI-enabled CCTV cameras from October. The system will be able to issue alerts in real-time of shootings, crimes against women, vehicle thefts and abandoned objects.

In addition to CCTV, Delhi will gain 200 gunshot detectors placed strategically around the city. Each gunshot detector has three acoustic sensors. The city will also place 300 public address speakers which can be used to manage crowds during an emergency.

An integrated command, control, communications and computing centre (C4i) at Delhi police headquarters will receive and coordinate alerts and intelligence from the sensors and cameras throughout the city. Alerts and intelligence will also be despatched in parallel to local police stations.

The October roll-out is the first phase of a programme to improve public safety throughout the city. The city is targeting high risk and densely populated areas first. Over time, the number of sensors and cameras deployed will be increased in subsequent phases. The police have a target of 10,000 cameras eventually.
