Safety organisations Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has expanded its IoT laboratory in Dongguan, China, to support manufacturers in navigating the complexities of connected products, wireless device testing and market access.

The Illinois-based company, known these days as UL Solutions, has opened its expanded Songshan Lake IoT Laboratory in Dongguan. The 3300-square-metre facility, which replaces a nearby smaller facility, includes EMC chambers and significantly expands the firm’s capacity and capabilities in China.

EMC testing available at the facility will assess products’ ability to function without causing or being susceptible to electromagnetic interference across various devices, from household appliances to high-powered industrial equipment. The EMC chambers enhance UL’s ability to handle high-power and high-current product testing particularly for large items, and support the latest wireless technology.

“With the proliferation of devices and technologies in today’s hyperconnected world, product testing is a fundamental imperative to demonstrate those devices’ safety and security,” said Todd Denison, senior vice president at UL. “The investment in our Songshan Lake IoT Laboratory furthers our pledge to help customers demonstrate compliance with safety and interoperability requirements here in China and for the global market.”

In addition to the EMC testing, the laboratory provides other testing services, including those that focus on wireless, telecommunications, 5G New Radio and wifi, as well as specialised automotive testing and IoT evaluations with cyber-security and interoperability certifications.

To address increasing demand and evolving regulations, the laboratory also offers Wifi 6E and 7 testing systems and a USB-Type C test platform for CE Radio Equipment Directive compliance. Combined, these capabilities enhance UL’s ability to handle high-power and high-current product testing and strengthen its position in automotive connectivity, smart home and other interoperability test areas.

Complementing the IoT laboratory in China, UL provides connected product and wireless device testing and certification services globally at facilities in India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, UK and the USA, in California, Illinois and North Carolina.
