Spanish satellite IoT firm Sateliot has partnered Chilean ag-tech company LemSystem to digitalise irrigation management in remote agricultural areas.
This initiative could enable up to 30% savings in water and energy and a 10% improvement in crop yield and quality.
This alliance comes at a critical time for Chile’s agricultural sector, which is seriously threatened by water scarcity. The country has experienced a 40% decline in rainfall over the past 50 years, facing a structural drought that affects over 100 countries worldwide to varying degrees.
Sateliot enables the connection of cellular equipment even in remote areas, reducing costs and technological barriers. This allows LemSystem to operate in regions that previously had no coverage, overcoming one of the major limitations for implementing smart irrigation and agricultural monitoring.
LemSystem’s platform integrates climate, soil and crop sensors with AI and geo-referenced visualisation, empowering data-driven irrigation decisions without relying on terrestrial mobile networks.
This partnership is part of Sateliot’s broader expansion strategy in Latin America, where the company aims to extend its 5G IoT space-based connectivity model to key sectors such as agriculture, especially in rural areas lacking mobile coverage.
Following the success in Chile, Sateliot plans to replicate this model in other regional markets such as Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Mexico, where connectivity problems remain a significant barrier to deploying digital technology that enhances the competitiveness of the agri-food sector.
“Chile, as an agricultural powerhouse and major agri-food exporter, must adopt smart technologies to move towards a more efficient, sustainable and resilient model,” said Gianluca Redolfi, chief commercial officer of Sateliot (sateliot.space). “The lack of mobile networks in remote areas has long been a barrier for small and medium producers. 5G satellite connectivity finally opens the door to real digitalisation, not just in agriculture, but also in key sectors like mining, logistics and environmental protection.”
Jorge Ulloa, general manager of LemSystem (lemsystem.cl), added: “This partnership with Sateliot represents a technological leap that allows us to scale to new rural areas. Thanks to this, we can now reach even the most isolated fields with competitive pricing and without relying on traditional mobile infrastructure.”
