The joint security initiative between the IoT M2M Council (IMC) and the Global Certification Forum (GCF) is set to benefit from a free IoT technology regulatory database produced by Transforma Insights.

Transforma and the IMC will be on-site at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to provide information on the database, which has been made available for free to anyone registered for the Transforma Insights free Essential subscription option.

“As technology regulators have upped their game, so has the technology industry,” said Matt Hatton, a founding partner of Transforma Insights. “We note in particular a joint initiative between the IoT M2M Council, the world’s largest trade association dedicated to the IoT sector, and the Global Certification Forum to determine the feasibility of a holistic approach to IoT security considering devices, connectivity, and IoT cloud and application platforms. We are delighted to make our regulatory database available to our free Essential subscribers in support of this key industry initiative.”

Sri Ramachandran, IMC (www.iotm2mcouncil.org) chairman and CTO at Somos (www.somos.com), added: “The Transforma Insights regulatory database will be a powerful tool in helping the new IMC-GCF Joint Task Force assess how different standards and certifications may help IoT adopters meet regulations around the globe. Our most recent surveying shows that just keeping track of these regulations is a major issue. This comprehensive data platform will ease this problem for the entire IoT sector.”

Regulatory compliance has become an increasingly challenging aspect of the deployment of technologies such as IoT and artificial intelligence (AI). Companies looking to make use of such technologies to support their digital transformation need to be aware of the latest relevant regulations affecting security, privacy, data sovereignty, procurement and other areas.

To help companies better understand the relevant regulations, Transforma is making its regulatory database (transformainsights.com/research/regulations) available for free to any subscriber to its Essential service.

Transforma beta-launched the regulatory database in August 2023, focussing on an initial 18 countries. It is now fully live and includes analysis of regulations relating to digital transformation in the top 45 countries.

As of this month, the database contains 258 regulations, standards, policies, national strategy documents and declarations together with a range of other relevant information such as statements received directly from national telecommunications regulators.

“Regulations for digital transformation are evolving so quickly, and are potentially so impactful, that Transforma Insights has made our regulatory database available to anyone registered for our free Essential subscription option,” said Jim Morrish, also a Transforma Insights founding partner. “Technology regulators really seem to have found their mojos lately and there are complex and extensive regulations emerging around the world, particularly in the context of the internet of things and artificial intelligence. Some of these regulations have real teeth. Europe’s Cyber Resilience Act, for example, provides for fines of up to 2.5% of worldwide turnover.”

Regulatory considerations for digitally transformative projects involving technologies such as the IoT, AI and particularly wide area wireless connectivity are becoming potentially far more intrusive for all stakeholders. Regulatory restrictions must be considered for any digitally transformative project from the start. In future, there will be more, not less, regulations with which to contend.

The regulatory database provides an analysis of the global regulatory environment as it applies to digital transformation using Transforma Insights’ DNA of Regulations framework as a reference and focussing on the technology groups highlighted in the framework.

The database is comprised of three views – summaries of regulations within any given country, summaries of key regulations with links to those regulations, and a facility to compare aspects of regulations across different countries.

The 45 countries selected for full coverage are Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, UK, USA, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
