Canadian telco Rogers Communications is rolling out 5G Advanced RedCap technology to power IoT applications.

The company announced this week that it had started to deploy Ericsson 5G Advanced technology on its national network, a first for a Canadian operator, to enhance performance and capabilities for consumers and businesses.

“5G Advanced will help unlock the full potential of 5G for businesses and consumers,” said Mark Kennedy, chief technology officer at Rogers. “We continue to invest in Canada’s largest 5G network and are proud to be the first in Canada to bring 5G Advanced technology to our customers.”

With RedCap, IoT devices, such as sensors, cameras and monitoring equipment, use network resources more efficiently and connect seamlessly. For consumers, the technology supports longer battery life for wearables, including smartwatches.

“Ericsson is proud to partner with Rogers to bring the latest network technologies to Canadians,” said Jeanette Irekvist, president of Ericsson (www.ericsson.com) in Canada. “The deployment of Ericsson 5G Advanced features marks another exciting chapter in our collaboration and together we will enable differentiated connectivity and deliver high-performing programmable networks that will ensure Canadian consumers and businesses are among the first to access the newest global technologies.”

Since launching wireless services in Canada in 1985, Rogers has partnered with Ericsson to bring network technologies to Canadians, from 1G to 5G and beyond.

Rogers has invested over $40bn in its networks over the past decade. The company continues to invest to expand the country’s largest and most reliable 5G network, which now reaches more than 2500 communities.
