To modernise traffic operations, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDoT) has partnered with Flow Labs to deploy its AI-powered traffic signal operations software across the state.

Now fully operational, the deployment covers over 2500 intersections, providing insights and visibility across North Carolina’s entire signal network.

This marks the largest live statewide deployment of AI-based traffic signal software in the USA, setting a standard for how quickly and effectively a public agency can modernise operations at scale.

“North Carolina didn’t just invest in a new tool, they embraced a new model for traffic operations,” said Jatish Patel, CEO of California-based Flow Labs. “NCDoT’s leadership and engineering teams are among the most progressive and mission-driven in the nation. Their willingness to act decisively and deploy smarter options at scale has made this partnership incredibly rewarding.”

Flow Labs’ platform uses machine learning and high-penetration connected vehicle data to deliver continuous monitoring of intersection performance. Engineers can detect issues before they escalate, prioritise interventions based on real-world traffic patterns, and improve signal operations without relying on field studies, hardware deployments or infrastructure changes.

“This isn’t a plan or a future vision,” Patel said. “It’s a fully deployed statewide system that’s delivering value today. We’re proud to support an agency like NCDoT that doesn’t wait for change, they lead it.”

With no need for new hardware or lengthy installations, Flow Labs’ software-first approach provided NCDoT (www.ncdot.gov) with network-wide insights and reporting capabilities from day one. It represents a growing trend among agencies that are moving beyond traditional methods and turning to scalable, data-driven tools to enhance safety, reduce congestion and improve operations.

“This partnership is built on shared values of innovation, agility and a deep commitment to public impact,” said Patel. “We’re honoured to work alongside NCDoT’s exceptional team and excited for what’s ahead.”

Flow Labs’ platform is in use with agencies across the USA and demonstrates how modern traffic operations can be transformed with speed, intelligence and flexibility.

Flow Labs (www.flowlabs.ai) is a transportation technology company pioneering the use of geospatial AI to transform how agencies manage mobility, safety, and infrastructure. Founded in 2018, it delivers data-driven software that enables cities, counties and states to analyse, predict and optimise transportation networks at scale, without costly infrastructure or hardware upgrades.

By combining connected vehicle data with AI, Flow Labs empowers agencies to make faster, smarter decisions across a range of applications, from traffic signal optimisation and performance measurement to corridor analytics, safety insights and network-wide planning.
