Austrian rail communications specialist Kontron Transportation has joined the effort to build high speed rail in Egypt, which is led by Siemens Mobility. Kontron will provide the programme with turnkey GSM-R railway radio communications technology. It will provide communications for a project designed to transform the railways system in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East – with a new electrified train network which will connect 60 cities throughout the country with 2.000 kilometres state-of-the-art high-speed rail network.

Kontron Transportation will deliver railway radio communication technology fully compliant to UIC Railways standards and based on an IP cybersecured technology portfolio, which will pave the way to Next Generation 5G FRMCS and ensure smooth GSM-R/FRMCS transition.

Kontron Transportation GSM-R technology will be deployed over the three lines. The first one connecting the port cities of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Marsa Matrouh and Alexandria on the Mediterranean. The second one runs between Cairo and Abu Simbel and the third one connecting Luxor with Hurghada via Safaga. This will sustainably connect millons of people and allow them access to urban infrastructure also for healthcare and education. This makes the project a valuable contribution to global initiatives to action carbon emissions.

“We are honoured to be part of this amazing project, which will give 90 percent of all Egyptians access to safe, clean and reliable long-distance transport. Connecting cities all across the country, while also cutting down on carbon emissions is a great undertaking in which we get to play a major role. Kontron Transportation’s expertise in mission critical communications will support the project from the beginning and accompany it for the next years,” said Bernd Eder, COO at Kontron Transportation.
