Hitachi Rail has won a contract to provide a comprehensive passenger information system for the entire Lisbon Metro network.

The contract includes a complete overhaul of the central systems, the installation of screens at ten stations, and the implementation of passenger address systems at all stations.

Hitachi will deliver its Apis advanced passenger information system, which is already in use at Metro do Porto and Infraestruturas de Portugal.

The system enables real-time traffic information broadcasts and supports a wide range of multimedia formats. This scalable and modular installation will let Lisbon Metro advance the digitisation of information across its entire network, including rolling stock and surface-level data.

This contract represents the revival of a partnership between Hitachi Rail and Lisbon Metro. It also solidifies Hitachi Rail’s homegrown Apis, which will now be operational across Portugal’s three main rail transport infrastructures – Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro and Infraestruturas de Portugal.

The agreement aligns with Hitachi Rail’s broader mission to enhance connectivity, streamline journeys, and promote sustainable transport for passengers and communities.

“This contract is a testament to the quality and functionality of Hitachi Rail’s Apis product,” said João Araújo, president of the board of directors at Hitachi Rail (www.hitachirail.com) in Portugal. “We are thrilled to welcome Lisbon Metro back as a customer and look forward to showcasing our capabilities while fostering a stronger relationship.”

Maria Helena Campos, acting chair of Metropolitano de Lisboa (www.metrolisboa.pt), added: “This is an important milestone in our commitment to innovation and customer service improvement, contributing to a more accessible, efficient and future-ready public transport system. With this new system, Lisbon Metro customers will have access to relevant real-time travel information, enabling greater efficiency in their journeys and better integration with other modes of transport. We are confident that this new service, resulting from the signed contract, will further strengthen the quality of the service we provide daily to the Lisbon metropolitan area.”
