Technology group GMV has landed contracts worth more than €16m to implement intelligent transport systems in Spain.
The company will supply central management systems for intercity public transport in the communities of Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia and Aragón.
These systems will allow the integration of all public transport information and the management of the services necessary for citizens, the administration and operators.
Spanish firm GMV’s ITS Suite multiplatform will provide central management for intercity public transport.
Rural areas comprise a total of 6656 municipalities, with dispersed population centres occupying 83.9% of the total area of Spain, in which 15.8% of the country’s population is registered. The lack of connectivity, underdeveloped infrastructure and limited access to quality services have made rural areas less attractive environments for young people to live and work, also harming older people who may have mobility difficulties.
To address this and ensure sustainable mobility, it is necessary to implement policies and actions that guarantee universal accessibility to basic services, promoting efficient public transport alternatives adapted to the needs of the population.
Regional intercity transport in Spain is characterised by a high number of routes with low occupancy levels and poor operating results, serving a multitude of routes that connect sparsely populated towns with the main urban centres. As public services, their main objective is to guarantee the mobility of citizens and ensure infrastructures are reliable, sustainable, resilient and of quality.
The objective of the European funds is to promote the economic, social and territorial cohesion of the European Union around the digital transformation, the ecological transition and growth. This huge commitment by the European Union presents a challenge for the necessary cooperation and collaboration between public administrations and the private sector, which will accelerate the transformation towards sustainable mobility.
Among the actions to achieve this mobility, various communities tendered in 2023 for the supply and implementation of a central ITS management system that would allow the integration of all the information on interurban public transport and the management of all the services generated from this information for citizens, the administration and operators.
GMV says it can meet the needs of metropolitan transport authorities or regional transport consortia, as well as similar administrations on an international scale. ITS Suite (www.gmv.com/es-es/productos/sistemas-inteligentes-transporte/suite) is a public transport management and passenger information platform, which provides access to a range of ITS applications, such as operating support system and passenger information, planning and scheduling, real-time regulation and control, ticketing, eco-driving, security, and business intelligence.
GMV has also recently been awarded the contract to continue the operating support system service in Galicia, which the company implemented in 2015 and which brings together the transport management system of this community, integrating the information of 127 concessions and more than 3500 vehicles from the different road transport operators.
In 2022, GMV (www.gmv.com) also renewed the multi-fleet system for the Metropolitan Transport Authority of Barcelona.
Currently, more than 400 transport operators in 100 cities in countries such as the USA, Spain, Malaysia, Poland, Morocco, Sweden and Mexico use GMV’s intelligent transport management systems and passenger information systems.
