Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has started work on a traffic signal control system incorporating AI, predictive analytics and digital-twin technologies.
The upgraded UTC-UX Fusion system will be rolled out across all major intersections in Dubai, with project completion anticipated by the first half of 2026.
The RTA (www.rta.ae) said this was part of its commitment to implementing smart technologies and global best practices in traffic intersection management. These efforts align with Dubai’s strategy to become a smart and sustainable city by improving road network efficiency and optimising traffic movement. RTA says it is reinforcing Dubai’s position in intelligent mobility.
“This project aligns with RTA’s vision as the world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility by improving journey time and reducing traffic congestion at intersections by 10% to 20%,” said Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s Traffic & Roads Agency. “It aims to enhance the travel experience for all road users, including motorists, public transport passengers, pedestrians and cyclists, while also prioritising emergency vehicles and public transport.”
He said the upgraded traffic signal system offered several advanced features, including predictive traffic analysis to optimise signal timings dynamically in anticipation of expected traffic movements, thereby enhancing overall traffic network efficiency.
Digital-twin technology allows signal adjustments to be simulated and their impact assessed before actual implementation, while enabling priority-based traffic management. Additionally, the system leverages data from road sensors to refine signal timings efficiently.
“The UTC-UX Fusion system dynamically adapts to real-time traffic changes by analysing data and making intelligent decisions to optimise signal timings,” said Al Banna. “It also supports future technologies and initiatives, such as cooperative intelligent transport systems, which facilitate communication between smart vehicles and traffic signals to enhance traffic flow efficiency. This will play a key role in reducing journey times, improving traffic fluidity and enhancing the overall mobility experience across Dubai.”
