Chatham Area Transit (Cat) in Georgia, USA, is working with nonprofit Fuse to improve public transport in Savannah through the implementation of the Cat Smart microtransit project.
Fuse is helping local governments build more equitable communities. Fuse executive fellow Gloria Wesley will lead the initiative.
The Cat Smart microtransit project, supported by a $1.2m SMART (Strengthening Mobility & Revolutionising Transportation) grant, introduces a flexible, on-demand transportation service that uses dynamically routed vehicles to respond to real-time passenger requests. This approach combines fixed routes with on-demand shuttles, enhancing the adaptability and resilience of transit services in Savannah.
The aim is to transition legacy systems into the digital age to improve service efficiency and user experience. It will support a one-year internship programme with Savannah State University (www.savannahstate.edu) to foster diversity in the transportation sector.
Electric vehicles (EVs) will use charging algorithms to optimise energy efficiency and promote eco-friendly transportation options.
The objective is to blend seamlessly on-demand and fixed-route segments to reduce waiting times and enhance user satisfaction.
Wesley will spearhead the project. Her role will focus on expanding electrified public transit to connect affordable housing, ensuring the benefits of improved transportation reach all residents, particularly those from under-represented backgrounds.
“We are thrilled to partner with Chatham Area Transit and the city of Savannah on this ground-breaking project,” said James Weinberg, CEO of Fuse. “Gloria Wesley’s expertise and dedication to equity will be instrumental in driving this initiative forward, creating a more inclusive and efficient transit system for Savannah.”
Faye DiMassimo, CEO of Chatham Area Transit, added: “The Cat Smart microtransit project represents a significant step towards modernising our public transportation infrastructure. With the support of Fuse and the leadership of Gloria Wesley, we are confident that this project will greatly enhance mobility and accessibility for all residents.”
Chatham Area Transit (www.catchacat.org) aims to provide safe, reliable and efficient public transport for the residents of Chatham County.
Fuse (fuse.org) is a national nonprofit that partners with local governments to help communities. By embedding private sector executives in city and county agencies, Fuse works to narrow racial disparities, improve public services and accelerate systems change.
