Qualcomm is partnering Italian industrial automation specialist SECO to help launch a range of new edge computing products for industrial IoT.

Through the agreement, SECO is designated as an IIoT design centre partner of Qualcomm Technologies. It will be responsible for developing reference designs for off-the-shelf hardware solutions for mainly OEM customers.

The collaboration is aimed particularly at creating a modular system-on-module (SOM) and a single board computer (SBC). Both products will be made available within the SECO catalogue of standard edge computing solutions.

Qualcomm Technologies will support SECO in the development of these products in order to accelerate their time to market, and provide technical support, facilitating the integration of its components into new SECO products.

Custom designs for customers who use Qualcomm Technologies chipsets will be promoted, in order to better respond to the specific needs of companies in their respective vertical sectors. The design flexibility adds value for companies wanting to optimise the performance and potential of their devices through the implementation of IIoT applications.

With a view to offering a complete and end-to-end service for the creation of AI-powered devices, SECO will finally be able to assist users of these solutions to quickly connect to CLEA – the internally developed IoT platform – enabling capabilities, including machine learning and artificial intelligence applications, in machines built for end users.

“Technological advances in connectivity, computing, on-device AI and cloud services are fuelling the digital transformation of businesses, and we are pleased to partner with SECO as our design partner to simplify and broaden the deployment of IoT technology,” said Roberto Di Pietro, VP, Business Development of Qualcomm Europe, Inc. “By combining our technology leadership with SECO’s expertise in hardware development, we will help OEM customers bring IoT products to market faster and address new use cases of edge computing and artificial intelligence.”

“We are particularly proud to receive recognition of our technological capabilities from one of the main global players. The agreement with Qualcomm represents an extraordinary opportunity for SECO to further increase its visibility and market penetration. Thanks to this collaboration we will be able to offer increasingly cutting-edge hardware solutions and make them available to our customers, effectively accelerating their digital evolution”, said Massimo Mauri, chief executive of SECO SpA.
