Two different health centers will be using Philips’ in-home medicine dispensing device and monitoring platform to improve medication adherence across at-risk patients.
Last month, the Lynn Community Health Center in Lynn, MA has put together a pilot to study the impact of medication adherence tech on mental health patients. For those taking multiple medications, it can be difficult for patients, caregivers, and clinicians to keep track of what medicines have been taken, along with when they’re supposed to take them. Going off medications unexpectedly due to lack of adherence can have negative impact on patients.
According to Healthcare IT News, the Philips’ in-home dispensing device includes “pre-packaged, unit-dose medications from mail order and specialty pharmacies, a clinician portal and a caregiver app.” Additionally, caregivers receive daily notifications of non-adherence patients.
Similarly, the Triad Health Care Network in Greensboro, NC will also utilize Philips’ in-home dispensing device and portal to assist patients with chronic diseases within the Medicare Advantage population. Patients within this program often have complex medication regimens to help manage their chronic illnesses and non-adherence is a big challenge to overcome.
Quoted in Healthcare IT News, Derek Ross population health management unit leader at Philips said, “Medication non-adherence costs the U.S. health system more than $310 billion every year, and it results in hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths annually.”
It will be interesting to see how the implementations work out and if Philips’ adherence technologies can be utilized for patients in other at-risk categories moving forward.
