Smart ring maker Ōura has launched an AI-powered health coach that uses health-sensing algorithms and large language models (LLM) to analyse data and biometrics to offer personalised and contextual guidance.
Called Oura Advisor, it helps Ōura members understand their health more intimately.
In an internal survey of Oura Labs users, 60 per cent reported that Oura Advisor helped them understand metrics or concepts they didn’t fully grasp. It can discuss longer-term trends, highlight health patterns, and reference existing graphs and charts from a member’s sleep, activity, readiness and stress resilience data.
For example, Oura Advisor can chat about how consistent meal timing will affect metabolic health or proactively notify a member if their deep sleep patterns may have changed recently and what this may mean for overall health. Today, members can ask Oura Advisor general questions about topics such as women’s health and heart health. In the future, it will have the ability to discuss these topics and more overlayed with a member’s personalised data.
Members can start chats about topics they’re interested in learning more about or use a topic-generation prompt for ideas on what to chat about. Prompts can help Oura members tune into areas of their health that may need attention, based on their personal trends and lifestyle. Around 87 per cent of members said Oura Advisor accurately remembered details about their health goals from past conversations, tying their personal life context into what it means for their health and wellness.
Members can create action plans centred around goals such as improving sleep, reducing sedentary time or improving stress resilience. Oura Advisor will store context about a member’s health goals, daily biometrics and life experiences to improve recommendations in the future. Memories stored by Oura Advisor can be deleted at any time.
Oura Advisor can provide summaries across various health topics, from sleep to stress to fitness to metabolic health. For example, summaries might include a reference to a particular week where Oura Advisor noticed a member’s sleep score trending up or, if there is a mention of an upcoming work trip, it may pull up a summary of stress resilience and readiness trends from the previous week to discuss how a member can best take care for themselves while traveling.
Members can select their preferred tone of voice, from supportive to more goal-oriented. They can also customise focus areas to ensure the guidance is aligned with their health goals.
“Oura Advisor is a meaningful step in our broader pursuit of leveraging AI to transform human care, and we’re excited to continue evolving our product experience to match the rapid pace of developing technology,” said Tom Hale, CEO at Ōura. “We’ve laid a strong foundation, and our ambition is to continue optimising for privacy, implementation, and user experience through product development and processing on-device.”
The magic of Oura Advisor is its proprietary combination of generative AI with Ōura’s biometric tracking, a commitment to scientific rigour, and years of research and validation. This is complemented by a compassionate approach, enabling conversations about health that empower members with deeper health insights.
“One of our greatest contributions to the domain of generative AI is the understanding of our members’ context,” said Holly Shelton, chief product officer at Ōura. “Ōura’s wealth of data insights is vast, but without the appropriate context, it can be difficult to connect daily habits with long-term health. We envision Oura Advisor as a companion that provides personalised guidance from the moment you start interacting with it, offering feedback that is contextually sensitive, accurate and delivered in Ōura’s signature supportive tone. As we continue to add AI-powered capabilities, the Ōura experience will only continue to get more accurate and nuanced in how it pulls out trends, provides insights and encourages behaviour that impacts people’s health for the better.”
