Facebook owner Meta has acquired AI start-up Limitless, formerly known as Rewind and the maker of a wearable pendant that can act as an AI assistant.

The acquisition was announced in a blog post by Limitless co-founder and CEO Dan Siroker. Meta is believed to want to use the technology to build its own AI wearables. The Limitless pendant will no longer be sold.

“When we started Limitless five years ago, the world was very different,” said Siroker. “AI was a pipe dream to many. Hardware start-ups were considered unfundable, and a business that did both AI and hardware would have been considered ludicrous. But today is different. The world has changed. We’re no longer working on a weird fringe idea. We’re building a future that now seems inevitable. We’re not alone.”

He said Meta recently announced a vision to bring personal superintelligence to everyone and a key part of that vision was building AI-enabled wearables.

“We share this vision,” he said, “and we’ll be joining Meta to help bring our shared vision to life.”

For existing Pendant customers, he said they would continue to be supported for at least another year, but Pendant would no longer be sold to new customers. Existing customers will no longer need to pay a subscription, and they will get the unlimited plan for free.

“That said, we will be sunsetting non-Pendant functionality like Rewind, and there’ll be updates to regional availability,” he said.

Continuing customers will need to agree to an updated privacy policy and terms of service.

“Whether you choose to continue to use the Pendant or not, your data will remain safe,” Siroker promised.

Limitless has just launched a feature to make it easier for users to export all their data (help.limitless.ai/en/articles/13004987-how-to-download-your-limitless-transcripts-and-account-info) and they have the option to delete all their data within the app (help.limitless.ai/en/articles/13005203-how-to-delete-your-limitless-account-and-data).
