Italian software player ABO Data and Telecom Italia are to collaborate on the development of M2M offerings aimed at improving industrial efficiency, starting with a service that will support end-to-end management of vending machines in the food and beverage sector.

The players say their technology will allow vending operators to realize a number of logistical benefits, enabling them to track machines, monitor operations, collect and analyze real-time data and launch updates remotely.

Under the terms of the agreement, Telecom Italia (Milan, Italy) Digital Solutions will combine its commercial development capabilities with the library of connected services that sit on ABO Data’s (Bogliasco Genova, Italy) PLAT.ONE application platform.

The partners aim to develop a range of services around specific industries, ranging from telemetry to remote control and automated diagnostics.

Commenting on the initial move into vending, the companies referred to recent analyst data indicating the numbers of connected devices in the vending industry will surpass three million globally by 2018.

The PLAT.ONE platform has already been made available on Telecom Italia’s cloud service to support the development and deployment of “enterprise-grade” connected solutions.

“Telecom Italia’s customers have high expectations and have always received best in class solutions,” said Antonio Murroni, the chief executive of ABO Data. “We are very pleased to bring our enterprise-grade platform to meet these demands of quality and satisfaction.”

“PLAT.ONE’s features and functionalities are uniquely suited for such where high-scalability and mission critical reliability are essential,” he added.

Telecom Italia says that enterprises are becoming increasingly keen to integrate M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies as part of their core business processes, which means they need high-quality service levels as well as scalable and flexible solutions.

“In this scenario ABO Data’s PLAT-ONE enterprise-grade solution will enable Telecom Italia Digital Solutions to achieve leadership in the connected-industry market, allowing us to be closer to the needs of our customers,” said Luigi Zabatta, the executive director of the M2M and IoT services line of business within Telecom Italia Digital Solutions.
