Module maker Novatel Wireless and mobile virtual network operator RacoWireless have together launched a telematics service in Latin America that will allow organizations to monitor driver behavior and vehicle diagnostics.

The service should allow companies that manage vehicle fleets to reduce fuel and other running costs and make improvements to the efficiency of their operations.

It includes Novatel’s (San Diego, CA, USA) MT 2500 device, which has been designed to capture and monitor driver behavior and to relay vehicle information on criteria such as rapid acceleration, harsh braking, speed violations and excessive idling.

The MT 2500 also includes an optional battery for communications in the event of a loss in power.

Raco, meanwhile, is contributing its Position Logic platform, which allows companies to track assets using a web-based interface.

“Coupling [Novatel’s] leading devices with our platform enables us to deliver a full featured, end-to-end solution to our customers,” said Felix Lluberes, the president of location-based services for Raco (Cincinnati, OH, USA).

Novatel and Raco are among a number of M2M players targeting the vast Latin American market, where organizations in a range of vertical markets are looking to M2M technology as a means of lowering costs and opening up new revenue opportunities.
